Top Sailing Destinations in Thailand: A Skipper’s Guide

Thailand is a premier year-round destination, boasting a tropical climate with steady temperatures averaging 30°C. However, for those at the helm, the sailing experience is defined by two primary monsoon seasons.

The greatest advantage of chartering in Thailand is its geography: when one side of the peninsula experiences the rainy season, the other side is usually enjoying prime sailing conditions. This ensures that no matter when you choose to fly, there is always a perfect stretch of water waiting for you.

The Andaman Sea: Phuket, Krabi & The Phi Phi Islands

The Andaman Sea: The "Hollywood" of the Sailing, is Thailand’s most iconic and spectacular sailing destination. This is where you’ll find the famous "postcards" come to life: towering limestone cliffs rising vertically from emerald-green waters, hidden caves (Hongs) accessible only by dinghy, and white-sand beaches that look like a permanent Instagram filter. As the region with the most advanced maritime infrastructure in Southeast Asia, it offers a sea

Must-Visit Highlights:

Phang Nga Bay - Home to the legendary "James Bond Island" and a labyrinth of spectacular rock formations, Railay Beach: A world-renowned spot for rock climbing and stunning coastal vibes, The Similan Islands: A dream destination for those seeking world-class diving and pristine marine life.

Gateway: Phuket International Airport (HKT).

Main Departure Bases

The Twin Bays of Phi Phi Don
  • Yacht Haven Marina (צפון פוקט)

  • Ao Po Grand Marina

  • Krabi Boat Lagoon

Skipper to Skipper: If there’s one thing that defines sailing in the Andaman Sea, it’s the dramatic tidal range. Here’s a professional tip from my experience:

Watch the Swing: In Thailand, tidal differences can reach up to 3 meters. A bay that looks deep and inviting at noon can easily transform into a dry sandbar by sunset.

The Golden Rule: Never drop anchor based solely on what you see in the moment. Always consult your tide tables and calculate your depth for the lowest point of the night. There’s nothing less relaxing than waking up at a 45-degree angle because the water decided to leave!

Pro Tip: When navigating near reefs or entering "Hongs" (sea caves), timing is everything. Use the tides to your advantage to ensure safe passage and clear clearance.

Typical weather in the Andaman sea

  • The Winning Season: November to April. These are the months of the Northeast Monsoon, bringing clear blue skies, glassy "flat" seas, and pleasant, light breezes (5-15 knots).

  • The Monsoon Season: May to October. During this period, the sea can become rough with a higher swell (especially outside sheltered bays). Heavy tropical downpours are possible, though they are usually brief and followed by sunshine.

  • What to watch out for?

  • Tides: Extreme tidal ranges (up to 3 meters) can leave you "high and dry" or block access to sea caves (Hongs), where entry is only possible during specific time windows.

  • Shallow Reefs: Always maintain careful visual navigation; do not rely solely on digital charts when sailing close to shore.

Longtail boats in the bay on Koh Samui Island

Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao

If you’re looking for the perfect synergy between vibrant island life—home to the legendary Full Moon parties—and world-class diving and snorkeling, this is your ultimate cruising ground.

The Sailing Experience: The waters here are shallower and warmer, offering a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere than Phuket. Navigation is straightforward, allowing you to easily island-hop between the three main islands and the breathtaking Ang Thong Marine Park.

Main Departure Bases

  • Ocean Marina (Koh Samui)

Skipper-to-Skipper Tip: There are fewer full-service marinas in the Gulf of Thailand compared to Phuket. You will likely spend most nights at anchor or on a mooring buoy. It is crucial to ensure your yacht has a functioning generator and a watermaker—these are essential for your self-sufficiency in this region.

Weather in the Gulf of Thailand

  • The Winning Season: January to late August. The region enjoys an exceptionally long dry season, making it an ideal destination for sailing during the summer months (July-August), while the seas in Phuket are rough.

  • The Monsoon Season: September to December. These are the wettest months in this region, with a high probability of thunderstorms and unstable sea conditions.

What to watch out for?

  • Fishing Net Arrays: Local fishermen deploy very long nets that are often unmarked by buoys. Night sailing in this area is strongly discouraged to avoid the risk of propeller entanglement.

  • Sudden Gusts: During the shoulder seasons, strong Squalls can arrive rapidly—it is crucial to reef the sails in time.

The Koh Chang Archipelago: Wild Sailing & Untouched Horizons

"The Thailand of Yesteryear": Authentic Sailing in the Koh Chang Archipelago

Located on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand, near the Cambodian border, the Koh Chang Archipelago is a breathtaking collection of over 50 islands—the vast majority of which are protected within a National Marine Park.

This is the ultimate sailing destination for those looking to escape the tourist crowds. Here, you won't find massive marinas or shopping malls; instead, you’ll discover traditional stilt-house fishing villages, lush jungles sweeping down to the shoreline, and secluded anchorages where yours might be the only mast under the stars.

Traditional Stilt Houses: Living on the Water in Koh Chang

Skipper to Skipper: Navigating the Untamed East Koh Chang is raw and isolated, so preparation is key: provision fully on the main island before heading south, as supplies are scarce in the outer reaches. Navigation rewards a sharp eye—watch for unmarked rocks near the shoreline that digital charts might miss. Maintain a safe distance, trust your eyes over your GPS, and enjoy the solitude of Thailand’s best-kept secret.

Main Departure Bases

  • Siam Royal View Marina (Koh Chang)

  • Ao Thammachat, Main-land

Main Departure Bases

The Koh Chang Archipelago features a tropical climate, with the prime sailing season running from November to April. During this period, the Northeast monsoon prevails, bringing clear blue skies, calm seas, and steady 5-15 knot breezes. Temperatures remain warm year-round (averaging 30°C), though April is typically the hottest and most humid month. Starting in May, the Southwest monsoon arrives, bringing heavy tropical downpours and rougher seas that can be challenging for skippers. This is a pristine destination offering a quiet and secluded sailing experience, provided you time your charter during the dry and pleasant season.

Skipper's License

A common question we receive is whether an Israeli skipper's license is valid in Thailand. The short answer is: Yes, but with a few important details.

In most Thai charter companies, the Israeli Mashit 30 license is recognized and accepted for Bareboat rentals without any issues.

Key Requirements & Highlights:

  • Proven Experience (Sailing CV): Unlike the more relaxed requirements in Greece, Thai charter companies often request a "Sailing CV." If you have logged miles in the Mediterranean (Greece, Croatia, etc.), this is usually more than sufficient.

  • International Certifications: Licenses from international organizations such as RYA (Day Skipper and above), ICC, or ASA (104 and above) are globally accepted.

  • Radio Certification: It is highly recommended to hold a GMDSS/SRC certificate. However, most charter companies will accept a basic skipper's license that includes a radio endorsement.

Don't have a license? No problem.

Thailand is the ultimate destination to hire a Local or Israeli Skipper. Taking a skippered charter removes the responsibility of navigating complex reef systems and tides, allowing you to focus entirely on your vacation. Whether you want a local expert who knows every hidden cove or an Israeli skipper for a familiar language and vibe, we can arrange the perfect match for you.

Recommended cruise itineraries for a week-long vacation

Thailand belongs to us for cocktails, massages, parties and backaches and most of you didn't think it could be a crazy place to rent a yacht and travel without the noise of tuk-tuks, parties and crowds of tourists. Which makes you feel at home all the time. You are flexible in your schedules, not dependent on crowded ferries and can choose when to get close to the noise and when not.
We have built for you a number of possible routes in all the sailing areas of Thailand, all of which are detailed in a post explaining the sailing areas, the visiting seasons and what to watch out for

The Golden Tip for Sailing Thailand:

Never set sail without a reliable Tide Table app, synced specifically to your departure port. In Thailand, water depth is a dynamic equation of geometry and timing. Understanding the tidal curve isn't just a technicality—it’s the difference between a perfect, serene anchorage and a nerve-wracking night on the boat. Plan your swing, check your charts, and always respect the tide.
